Description: Original WW2 map entitled "COLLOBRIERES" which was printed for the INVASION of SOUTHERN FRANCE. Initially, the SOUTHERN INVASION was meant to happen simultaneously with OPERATION OVERLORD in NORMANDY. "OVERLORD" was originally codenamed "OPERATION HAMMER", and what eventually became known as "DRAGOON" was originally codenamed "ANVIL".....the implication being that the Germans would be caught between the two. However, after the poor progress following the January 1944 amphibious landings at ANZIO in ITALY, it was decided to shelve "ANVIL" and concentrate all efforts on "HAMMER" under its new name "OVERLORD". Despite this, when "OVERLORD" became bogged down in Normandy with logistical issues due to clogged ports, "ANVIL" re-emerged as the solution and was launched as "DRAGOON" on 15th August 1944. This decision was made in July 1944, and the map was printed in March 1944, so it would seem that it was originally produced for "ANVIL". The map features an area just inland from one of the main landing areas, ROMEO BEACH. Due to the surrounding terrain, COLLOBRIERES was an important town to capture as it offered good access to the road network for the expansion further inland. (At the time of listing, I also have the adjoining map to the South which features some of the landing areas and the islands of 'Port-Cros' and 'Levant'. The islands were the scene of preliminary Commando Raids to neutralise German gun batteries which threatened the success of the whole Operation.) It's in excellent condition. A great piece of History... Will be shipped as per its existing fold lines. Please see my other WW2 (and WW1) maps, documents, photos etc. (Seller's Ref - NNN)
