Copyright My Two Threads 2024 Singer Manufacturing Company (SInger MANufacturing COmpany-SIMANCO) marketed this Darning & Embroidery Foot to be compatible with their Singer 301-301a slant needle sewing machine which was their first slant needle sewing machine. SIMANCO 160822 is the only original vintage Singer slant shank darning, embroidery and quilting foot made to fit and operate correctly on the Singer 301-301a sewing machine models. The Singer Darning & Embroidery Boxed Set 160823 is complete with the embroidery foot SIMANCO 160822, its special presser bar mounting screw, an instruction manual and box. The box is in aged condition, shows wear and is intact. The instruction manual is original. If you are a free motion quilter or embroiderer and owner of a Singer 301-301a sewing machine who delights in original vintage Singer attachments this is an uncommon find. Let's Play!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Archive pictures of the Singer 160718 (a low shank side attaching embroidery foot) are used to illustrate and demonstrate the features of this type of spring loaded vintage Singer darning and embroidery foot. Singer 160718 is not for sale in this listing and is used for reference purposes only. The Singer feet 160822 and Singer 160718 operate in the same manner. Just like the Singer side attaching low shank spring loaded darning foot, the slant shank Singer 160822 quilting/embroidery foot is driven by the up and down movement of the needle clamp which is attached to the needle bar of your Singer 301-301a sewing machine. The spring loaded piston of this type of Singer embroidery foot (bottom red arrow in the picture below) slides inside the cylinder and is controlled by an internal spring. This spring is what holds the eye of the foot against the fabric as the machine needle lowers to pierce the fabric and create a stitch. If the internal workings of the embroidery foot are corroded or rusted through age or neglect, the attachment may be frozen in place and not operate. The spring and piston inside the cylinder must be able to move fluidly and rapidly just like the piston in a car motor. As the needle bar raises up against the little arm (top red arrow in the picture below), the tension on the spring inside the cylinder reduces and releases the pressure on the eye of the foot. This action allows the Seamster to move the work easily and steadily under the stitching needle during free motion embroidery or quilting. Let's look at some features.By raising the presser bar lever and lifting this long arm at the side with your finger (top blue arrow), the spring inside the cylinder will compress. The foot will hop over the edge of the low profile sewing machine embroidery hoop (bottom blue arrow). This allows you to easily remove and adjust your work without having to remove the foot from your sewing machine. Having the correct attaching screw is important. I tried using my standard vintage Singer thumb screw to attach my low shank Singer embroidery foot. The embroidery foot did not sit snugly against the presser bar. Because the embroidery foot wasn't secured, it wobbled. The correct screw is longer and specially designed to go in from the left of the presser bar, through and into the curved side of the embroidery attachment which is attached to the right of the presser bar (green arrows). No other screw will work this way for this type of Singer embroidery attachment. The instruction manual shows you how to use your quilting and embroidery foot and prepare your Singer 301-301a sewing machine. And it is a mini machine embroidery lesson book! Your Singer 301-301a Sewing Machine is equipped with the ability to lower the feed dogs. Raise the bed extension and turn the thumb screw counter clockwise until the feed dogs lower fully. Remember to move the stitch length regulator to neutral. Do this to keep any movement from the feed dogs from scraping the underside of your work or a feed dog cover plate. ~~~ By the way, did you know? The "a" portion of Singer 301a sewing machine model simply stands for Anderson, South Carolina where Singer made Singer 301a's! The 301 and 301a are the same machine, share the same operating manual and have the same features. The Singer model 301 and 301a are highly regarded in the vintage Singer world today. ~~~Also,You CAN quilt or embroider without a feed dog cover plate on your Singer 301-301a. However, having a smooth surface allows your work to glide more easily under the rapidly stitching needle and reduces the risk of snagging on any rough surface below. The following examples of three types of vintage feed dog cover plates fit the Singer 301-301a sewing machine throat plate and machine bed. Many of us are multiple vintage Singer sewing machine owners. If you have one of the three plates shown above, there may be no need to purchase another plate for your Singer 301-301a!~~~A drop of good sewing machine oil should be applied to the spring barrel and to the screw thread before storing your precious foot. Coffee filter paper makes a good wrap and oil soaker. Like my comments? They are included!
