Description: This vintage Seaboard Coastline RR “Train Handling Instructions” book is a rare find for sale, particularly from its owner, a former Locomotive Engineer to whom this book was originally assigned and owned. Known as Form JMD 2023 was issued to Firemen during Locomotive Engineer Training School on the SCL Railroad which for me was 1977. Aside from thousands of hours working as a Fireman, under supervision of a qualified engineer, or others eventually you would make it to Locomotive Training School. Expect long hours 6 days a week from 7 to 4 in classroom instruction for about 3 months. The other 3 months alternately weekly with classroom was direct on the job experience under the direct supervision of a qualified engineer whom supervised your complete operation of the locomotive and entire train on all the territory you will operate in engine service. Testing at the conclusion of training required the successful passing of two written tests. One consisted of 200 hand written answers to questions regarding mechanical, air brakes and train handling rules. Passing this required at least a 75. The second test consisted of 100 questions regarding operating rules. Each answer had to be handwritten and quoted verbatim word for work as written in the rules. Successful passing grade was 100. Otherwise if you failed you had one opportunity to complete the entire training program again or you lost your railroad career. The book is in used but good condition, with no major damage or markings. It would make a great addition to any collection of transportation or railroad memorabilia. Don’t miss out on the chance to own this unique piece of history.
