Description: This ankle rattle appears primitive but its history is unknown. It was hand made with a leather strip, cord and tin. The tin rattles are crudely constructed and have a rusty surface. As I tried to find comparables, there were none exactly like it but the closest were of African origin. If anyone recognizes this piece, please let me know. One of the tin rattles has some letters written on it, but no meaning can be discerned from them. To me, they appear to be an identifier for a collection or exhibit. Since this piece is not terribly decorative, I think it was actually made to use rather than be sold as a souvenir of some sort. Stretched out, the leather is about 10 inches long.
