Description: USS OLYMPIA C-6 United States Navy cruiser cover with a postmark from Mare Island, CA on February 5, 1995. A photo of USS Olympia is printed on cachet #109 by Alvin Eckert, USCS #9964. USS Olympia: this 544 foot protected cruiser was built in San Francisco and commissioned 5 February 1895. She joined the US Asiatic Fleet that year and three years later lead the fleet that destroyed the Spanish Fleet at sea on 1 May 1898 at Manila Bay. This proud battleship served in the Northern Atlantic during the First World War and was decommissioned in 1922. She was made a museum ship in Philadelphia in 1957 and continues to raise funds for needed hull repairs.
