To facilitate business transactions and create a means to provide small change (other than postage stamps or mercantile tokens), the U.S. Treasury created Fractional Currency. The notes were issued from 1862 to 1876 in 3c, 5c, 10c, 15c, 25c, and50c denominations, with the First Issue being Postal Currency. In 1876, Congress authorized the mining of silver coins to redeem the outstanding Fractional Currency.
