TOOL: 72826 Demo Cassette Released: December 27, 1991 Country: USA Label: Toolshed Music The first official 4 Track TOOL Demo was manufactured at Richman Brothers pressing plant in New Jersey. It is rumoured that Zoo Entertainment/BMG ordered 1500 of these cassettes. Speculated to be 50 boxes total with 30 demos per box, packaged in 2 rows of 15. These demo cassettes were originally given away to friends of the band, industry insiders, as well sold at gigs and on their early snail mail merchandise order forms. 72826 features six tracks. Two of them, "Cold and Ugly" and "Jerk-Off", were never released as studio recordings outside this demo. Instead, they were re-recorded live at the Jello Loft on New Year's Eve 1991, the band's second public show. The live recordings were later featured on the band's first EP, Opiate (March 10, 1992) When the label were getting these made, Richman Brothers asked for a Catalog # for the Demo like most albums. Although referred to as the Toolshed demo, this is where Maynard thought of 72826. This number was given to the pressing plant (unknown to them at the time) that 72826 comes from the word SATAN spelled on a landline telephone keypad. (The above statement is confirmed in the 2016 M. J. Keenan biography "A Perfect Union of Contrary Things" (Backbeat Books) p. 160. Furthermore the biography notes the original selling price of six dollars ($6.00) for the cassette. Fun fact: The first person that Maynard James Keenan gifted one of these demos to was Hollywood actor Johnny Depp. THIS MESSAGE IS FROM BLAIR ON TOOL'S MAIN WEBSITE AND TOOL ARMY WEBSITE: "When thinking of rare TOOL collectibles, and especially one that commands a high price on eBay, the first thing that comes to mind would be a factory-sealed mint copy of the band’s 1991 original demo cassette, titled (or dubbed) 72826. (In case you didn’t know, the number is “SATAN” spelled out on a phone keypad.) With a simple illustration of the familiar phallic Tool wrench on the cover, the demo contains 6 tracks from TOOL’s first two records, including studio versions of “Cold & Ugly” and “Jerk-off.” As for the exact number of copies made, I’m going to guess around 500, although this could be higher, keeping in mind that many were given away by the band during early club performances. Whatever the number may be, a copy of this cassette makes for a nice centerpiece to any TOOL memorabilia collection." - Blair Mackenzie Blake Tracklist A1 Cold And Ugly A2 Hush A3 Part of Me B1 Crawl Away B2 Sober B3 Jerk-Off Identifiers Counterfeits are very rare. Even so, there are two distinctive ways to tell the official release from a counterfeit. Inside the cassette itself there will be inverted numbers on the inside from the manufacture. Noted inverted numbers (recognized amongst TOOL collectors that own this cassette) are all in the 30’s on Side A, and on Side B. These inverted numbers are moulded on the inside bottom middle part of the cassette. The top middle on Side B will have MADE IN THE U.S.A. It is difficult to see in low light because it is moulded on the inside of the plastic. The black strip across the cassette will extend just beyond the TOOL logo, and both the cassette sprockets are black.
