See Below** THE ORESTEIA by Aeschylus Heritage Press - SLIPCASED DELUXE GIFT EDITION Complete with Sandglass Notes The Oresteia is a trilogy of Greek tragedies written by Aeschylus, consisting of the plays Agamemnon, Choephoroe, and Eumenides. It tells the tragic story of the House of Atreus, a family cursed by the gods due to Agamemnon's sacrifice of his daughter Iphigenia to ensure favorable winds for the Trojan War. Agamemnon: The play begins with the return of Agamemnon, the king of Mycenae, from the Trojan War. However, his victory is overshadowed by the murder of his wife Clytemnestra and their daughter Iphigenia. Clytemnestra, driven by revenge for her daughter's sacrifice, kills Agamemnon with the help of her lover, Aegisthus. Choephoroe: Years later, Orestes, the son of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra, returns to Mycenae to avenge his father's death. He is aided by his sister, Electra, who has been longing for revenge. Together, they kill Clytemnestra and Aegisthus. Eumenides: Orestes is pursued by the Erinyes, or Furies, for his matricide. They seek to punish him for his crime. Athena, the goddess of wisdom, intervenes and establishes a court to judge Orestes' fate. After a trial, Orestes is acquitted, and the Erinyes are transformed into benevolent deities known as the Eumenides, or Kindly Ones. The Oresteia explores themes of vengeance, justice, guilt, and the role of the gods in human affairs. It is considered one of the greatest tragedies in Greek literature and continues to be performed and studied today. This Heritage club hardcover book is printed on a smooth, decorated boards, quarterbound in brick cloth with silver foil lettering. This copy is in fine condition, sunfaded spine and comes in the original slipcase. The book itself is in fine shape overall, the slipcase shows a minor amount of shelfwear. As will all Heritage Society book, the Sandglass notes are included, and it the book is very nicely illustrated, two examples are shown above, right and left, and the book is shown here at right. All in all, this is a book to be proud to own. Grab it before someone else does! It measures 13.4x9.75", weighs roughly 3.5lb. and if it matters, there is a former owners nameplate on the inside of the hardcover board. Enjoy!
