Description: THE CUB'S TRIUMPH & THE BOY WHO DREW CATS Japanese Fairy Taleswoodblock prints on crepe paper 1900sThis is in very good condition Takejiro Hasegawa was a Japanese publisher who during Japan?s Meiji period In 1885 decided to publish picture books for Western children.Hasagawa decided to publish "JAPANESE FAIRY TALE SERIES" first for the United States and France and later for other countries. Printed on crepe paper & bound in the traditional Japanese book binding style know as "fukuro-toji" which means "pouch binding and Silk stab tied. The most notable characteristic of Hasegawa books was the use of ?chirimen-gami?, or crepe paper. The production of this paper was laborious and costly. But the results were that the woodblocks printed nicely on the paper and gave the paper wonderful texture and durability (particularly with use by children). I first found these books in an antique shop in Philly. I was intrigued with the softness of the cloth (I later found was crepe paper) and the delicate and beautiful illustrations. That was many years ago but I would find a few more thru the years. All of these books are over 100 years old. Beautiful colored woodblock illustrations. 13 pages including covers most pages folded. Small book size: 4" X 8". Larger book 5 1/2" X 7 1/2". Please take time looking at the photos as they provide a bit of the description and condition of the pages in each book.
