Description: These vintage Studio Art pottery mug/beer steins are a unique, fun addition to any collection or gifted to that fun couple in your life! They have been made for each other which is why these characters are being sold together. Busting out with vintage character, this hippy lady has no reserves in showing off her best features in this charming mug. Mud In Your Eye Pottery (a toast to good health idiom) was founded by Frank Edward Howell in Los Gatos, California and was in business from 1971-1989 before moving to Bellingham, Washington since 1996. Made in the United States in the 1970s, this particular mug features a wide eyed beauty that will keep abreast as the topic of any conversation, perfect for any occasion from bachelorette parties to weddings. This mug has a capacity of 12 plus full ounces (6" depth) and is suitable for hot/cold beverages. The beige stoneware and folk art face make this mug a perfect fit for any vintage Americana themed decor or gift. It is handmade, signed by WD (1970s/80s) and comes with a handle for easy holding. This mug is 6.25" in height and 6.5" in width (handle to bust-see photo). It is 3" in diameter and 10" in circumference at the top and bottom (does not include handle and figure). This cigar chomping, mustachio'd grump chump seems to be put out with a resigned air from all of the attention his lady receives. He can hold you a cold brew (as a beer stein) and wash his blues away! This fellow has the maker's mark of Golden Age Pottery. My sleuthing did not turn up much history on this fine gent. However, similar pieces are ranging in the 1970/80s vintage era. He is 6.5" in height and (almost) 5.5 " in width (from handle to end of cigar-see photo). The top has a diameter of 3" and the bottom of 3.5",(does not include handle or figural face on mug). The circumference of the top is 10" and the bottom is 11.75" (does not include handle or figural face). The depth of this mug is 6" and can hold 12 plus fluid ounces. Both mug shots are made from Stoneware with a glazed, beige surface. The Bust Broad mug comes in weight at 1 pound and 14.4 ounces. The Stern Stein Guy comes in weight at 2 pounds and 1.2 ounces. These ugly face mugs come straight to you from the estate of a Connoissieur pottery collector. They are in "old-new" or very good condition with no chips, cracks, fading, or damage from use. The smoking gentleman mug does have a post-production crack on the bottom (see photo). Similar pieces that I researched from Golden Age pottery have similar cracks. This is due to the thick density of stoneware and high firing temperatures in the kiln. It is a common characteristic at the time of firing and does not detract from the quality or use of the pottery piece (see photo). These handmade, one-of-a-kind mugs are a part of the Boomerang Barn-new name for a restructured Ebay store (I have been here since the early 2000's), I am very comfortable with the world of vintage and art. I enjoy the history behind each piece that I discover and want to have the seller experience the same joy in the purchase. Please continue to visit my "old-new" store as I will be adding on an almost daily basis. I do my best to describe the condition of the piece as accurately as I can and to highlight any flaws or defects. Please refer to the photos for the most accurate representation of the item as what you see is what you will receive. The studio pottery pieces sold by Boomerang Barn which may be used for food or drink are individually tested for lead and the results are shown in the listings. Vintage pieces often contain lead. Please make sure all studio pottery pieces, old or new, used for food or drink are tested for lead. According to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)..."Today many potters of traditional or 'folk' pottery have switched to non-lead glazes, but they may still be using old kilns that were once firing lead-containing glazes, unintentionally contaminating the "lead-free" pottery with lead residues that remain in the kiln from past usage. Because the lead may not fuse into the non-lead glaze, it may contaminate food when the pottery is used with food."
