Unter Mitwirkung von Kunstmaler Fritz SkellAuthor: Albert HasselwanderPublished: Munich: Verlag von Bergmann 1926- 1st and only editionSize: apx 9" x 7" with 20 pages in German plus 50 plates Language: German with 46 photographs [complete] - There are 23 photographic plates of dramatically positioned [mostly] nudes, each one accompanied by 23 photographs on the facing page capturing their skeletal in "death" -printed on 1 side only, back sides are blank........PLUS 4 skeletons [not x-rays] - 1 crucified, the other with a hammer, plus 2 holding a rock...and 6 pictures in the 27 pages of German text Contents: - This strange and very rare book, pairs photographic reproductions of nude models in various postures with x-ray skeletons that have been carefully posed in the same positions, making for a modern anatomical interpretation of the medieval 'Dance of Death'. I do not read German, but in my research someone said there is the history of the 'Dance of Death'. This book was conceived by Albert Hasselwander. He was a radiologist and a professor of anatomy who saw his scientific work as providing new insight into the traditional obsession with the transience of human existence. The then-new technology of X-radiography allowed us to see inside living bodies in ways that had never before been possible; at the same time, those X-rays revealed the fundamentally mechanical quality of the human body. The book ends in a Christian mode, with a crucified skeleton and the other skeletal wielding mallet and nail. I am human and sometimes miss a thing or 2, but I try to mention the book's main faults. all of my books are VERY OLD and have years of wear to varying degrees very good minus condition.... for its ageboards - very secure, small area of discoloration to the front cover - see picture, plus a few other small spotstextblock- pages very secure outer joints- been repaired.....see picturesspine- ends pretty good / it has been repaired with the original spine [ and light cardboard ] laid downtips- pretty good inner hinges- very goodpages- generally very clean with a few pages having some light spots or handling marks. The girl with 2 pieces of paper on her - she may have a mark across her belly - I tried rubbing it and it won't come off so it may have been part of the printing process.
