Description: Vintage and RARE, "The French Huguenot Church - Charleston, SC" lithograph, signed by Charleston, SC artist Virginia Bouche (1929 - 2004). In this image there are two (2) African American women standing on the sidewalk in front of this historic landmark. Both are wearing white aprons and one (1) of them has a large basket of flowers on her head. Appears to be a bright blue sky, sunny & pleasant southern morning. The French Huguenot Church is the oldest Gothic Revival church in South Carolina and is designated a National Historic Landmark and is listed on The National Register of Historic Places. The congregation it serves traces its origins to the 1680's and is the only independent Huguenot Church in the United States. It is located across the street from the Dock Street Theater and is in front of the St. Philips Episcopal Church. It has stood on this site since 1687. Other interesting facts I learned while researching this church - it was damaged by shellfire during the Civil War and nearly demolished by the 1886 Charleston earthquake. Services at the church were traditionally timed with the ocean tides to accommodate those parishioners who arrived by boat from nearby plantations. Now you know. :) Double matted with a light cream colored over a blue mat. Frame is a simple wood frame. No glare from glass. TWO (2) signatures on lithograph - one that was printed and one that was signed by artist. Signatures are partially covered by the matting over the lithograph.
