Description: Painted Ponies Indian Appaloosa Horse BOOK Military War BOOK My grandfather, Shatka Bear-Step, wrote this booklet in 1952. It is a Collector Book famous among horse and Native American enthusiasts. I inherited a few of them years ago. I will keep a couple of them for myself and am selling the remainder here on ebay. Take advantage of this chance to own one of these VERY informative books. This one is in NEW unused condition. The softcover booklet measures 6-5/8" high by 5-3/8" wide. It is 40 pages, not counting the front and back covers, held together with 2 staples. My grandfather had the book printed himself; there were 4 printings and this one is from the 4th printing, copyright 1973. There are 34 original art drawings, all done by Shatka himself. The centerfold of the booklet shows a two-page drawing of a Dakota Sioux Indian brave and his war horse, about 1875. Shown are all of the brave's battle accessories; meanings are given to each of the paint markings and feather cuts on both horse and warrior. In addition, there are two photos, the first is of my Grandfather in full Indian attire sitting astride his renowned Appaloosa Stallion "Apache Tears". The second on the back cover shows the coveted "Bear-Step Katooche" of 1953 handmade of silver and turquoise. It was presented annually to the champion two-year-old Appaloosa stallion. In 1937 there were less than 20 known Appaloosa horses in the United States. The breed was on the brink of extinction. This book explains where the breed came from, how the breed was refined by the Nez Perce, why they were nearly exterminated by the US Army, and how they were saved by a small group of determined horse lovers, and even lists these people by name. The book is chock full of Indian and horse lore; he explains medicine bags, counting coups, fighting battles. Book even includes a poem by my Grandfather, "Another Horizon". There are several pages of information to help you give your horse an Indian name! Included is a chart showing the Indian names for various parts of the horse, such as head-"pa". There is a list of Omaha Sioux "War Names", such as War Chief-"Nudo Honga". Another list is of birds, such as dove-"thita", of animals, such as buffalo-"te", and over a hundred nouns, such as knife-"mon'hi". There are many other words translated, and a few verbs and adjectives. You are shown how to say "hello" in 20 Indian dialects. Included is a list of the Sioux names of the neighboring tribes, such as the Crows, Kiowas, and Navajos. At the end of the book are two full pages with over 150 general Indian symbols and marks such as strength, village, and poison water.
