Since the RF&P served as the northern connection for the SCL - as it had for its predecessor lines the ACL and SAL - I was privileged to work on a number of joint projects and to become acquainted with many of the SCL's dedicated employees. Over the years, it was always interesting to me that when you entered the office of a SCL or Family Lines employee, you could immediately identify that individual's home road. The walls and desk were always adorned with mementos of their past employer. Pride in the home road runs deep in railroaders. However, while the SCL employees retained a pride in their former roads, they also pulled together to make the SCL one of the most successful mergers in the history of the railroad industry. The SCL's success forever changed the landscape of Southeastern railroading and today its former lines are a key component of CSX Transportation, Inc. Telling the story of the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad would not have been possible without the assistance of many people. They all shared my interest in this great railroad and enthusiastically offered support for this project. Curt Tillotson, Jr. provided many exceptional photographs to illustrate the diversity of the SCL's motive power and operations. Curt is one of the greatest action photographers of the Southeastern railroads and I am pleased to preserve his work for the enjoyment of future generations in this book. I am also pleased to include the photographic works of W. E. Mims, whose railroad career included service with the ACL, SCL, SBD and CSX. Ed extensively photographed SCL operations in Florida immediately following the merger and he came to my aid with many great photos of passenger trains during that period. Ray Sturges provided many color photos of his own and from his extensive collection. He also assisted with timetables and articles from his file of historical newspaper clippings. Robert Richardson was a constant source of support, providing photos, maps and information from his collection. Paul Faulk provided information on SCL freight train operations and Mike Savchak answered many of my questions about the SCL's passenger train consists and its operation of dome cars.
