Scholastic The Leprechaun's Gold 5 Paperback Book Listening Center With Cassette

Description: This St. Patrick's Day listening center is adorable! It is in good condition, except the books have been re-stapled, as the center pages came loose. One page had a 3" tear, at the bottom, that I repaired with transparent. Luckily, it was on a page with a dark background, so you can barely tell it was even repaired. And, on another page, my aide tried to do a quick repair when a page came loose from a book, and she used shiny, non-transparent tape to quickly solve the problem. I didn't care for the way it looked, so I removed it. But, when I did the color came off with the tape. As it was on another page with a dark background, I simply colored it in with colored pencil. I have enclosed a close up of this page. I used listening center, in my kindergarten classroom, during the month of March. My students loved it! This set is clean and comes from a smoke free home. The books measure 8.5" x 11". The author is Pamela Duncan Edwards, and the illustrator is Henry Cole. The copyright is 2005, and the publisher is Scholastic. The following is a synopsis of the plot of the book.: Where there are leprechauns, surely there is gold to be found. But, at what price? In this classic Irish legend, two men who are well known harpists, in long ago Ireland, find out in this chipper tale that has the ring of folklore. Merry-hearted, kind Old Pat is known, around his village, as a fine, well-experienced harpist who makes music for all to hear (even when they can't pay for a performance). Thus, he doesn't have a lot of money. Conversely, the villagers know ill-spirited, selfish, and arrogant Young Tom, Old Pat's skilled but prideful former student, as one who sees no point in playing if not for financial reward. He believes he is better at playing the harp than Old Pat. But, when the king sponsors a contest to find the best harpist in the all of Ireland, it's the journey to the castle that proves decisive. When devious, mean Young Tom realizes that Old Pat is truly the better musician, he schemes to be the winner. He secretly snaps a string on Old Pat's harp, the night before the audition, to undermine his chances, so he won't be able to perform in the contest. That same night, the two travelers hear someone in trouble and crying for help. A leprechaun approaches Tom and Pat and needs help, because his foot is stuck in a rabbit hole. Young Tom thinks only of his upcoming performance, refuses to help, and takes off, while Old Pat risks the tricks of leprechauns, goes to offer help, and ends up rescuing the grateful little guy. Old Pat then kindly plays a soothing tune to calm the leprechaun down, but the subject of gold comes up, and the leprechaun becomes defensive despite Old Pat's protests that he wants none. Soon Old Pat finds himself asleep among a swarm of leprechauns. The next day, Old Pat continues on to the Royal Harping Contest where surprises abound! In return for his help, the leprechaun fixes Pat's harp string. And, Young Tom deals with the clever trickery of this mischievous little guy, as the leprechaun breaks the strings on Tom's harp! The next day, when Tom starts playing the harp, in the contest, he realizes his strings are broken. Pat then has a turn to play, and he ends up winning the contest. In a joyous conclusion, fittingly filled with music and dancing, Pat's kindness is repaid, and he indeed benefits from the leprechaun's treasure. Good wins in the end, and Young Tom learns his lesson! At the book's end, readers are challenged to find the 16 four-leaf clovers hidden in the artwork! This Irish legend embodies an important theme regarding misbehaving and the possible consequences which can occur because of poor choices that are made. Even though this book involves magical creatures, such as leprechauns, it still portrays an important moral for children to understand. This is a successfully written legend that is mystical, but somewhat realistic at the same time. This delightful and entertaining story of a musical duel, where kindness and honesty beats cunning and greed, with assist from a leprechaun, will delight young readers/listeners! Children will be rooting for Old Pat, as they know that a helpful and humble heart should win over a jealous and all-for-myself attitude! My kindergarten students loved that the leprechaun set things right and played a trick on Tom after Tom played a trick on Pat! They also loved that Old Pat kindly played his harp to hear and said, "I am rich in friends, and that is enough.", as opposed to Young Pat, who played only to earn money. The author builds a melodic rhythm with her quaint phrasing, and clean story line. The beautiful illustrations feature lots of green along with blue, gold, and brown. Cole plays up contrast and tension, conveying the stark differences between characters. Portraits of Old Pat, who sports variously an impish grin or a warm kindly smile, give this tale a timeless feel. This picture book, based on a classic Irish folktale, is a joyful and fanciful tale, with a priceless lesson, that is the perfect virtuous story to share on St. Patrick's Day! The morals of you get what you deserve, selfishness and scheming don't win out in the long run, and honesty and kindness pay off are humorously told in this pleasant tale with leprechaun magic. I also like his book, because it teaches the value of friendship, generosity, and doing right, because it is the right thing to do. The cassette comes in a plastic case. It has both a side A and side B. One side has turn-the-page signals. The other does not. My students only used the side with turn-the-page signals. If you would like pictures of the inside of the book, just let me know. I would be more than happy to add them to the listing. This listening center would make a wonderful addition to a daycare, preschool, or kindergarten or 1st grade classroom! I am hoping to find this set a good home.
