Description: Samuel Francis Smith [1808 1895] was an American Baptist minister, journalist, and author best remembered for having written the lyrics to ''My Country, ''Tis of Thee'' which he entitled ''America''. The song was written in 1831 while he was a student at Andover Theological Seminary and was published in 1832. Listed for auction is a wonderful display which contains the handwritten lyrics of America by Samuel Francis Smith. The display is centered around the image of Samuel Francis Smith, mounted next to his portrait are his lyrics signed on two [2] separate pages as follows, [1st page] America. My country 'tis' a thee, Sweet land of liberty, Of thee we sing, Land where my fathers died, Land of the pilgrim's pride, From every mountain side Let freedom ring. [2nd page] Our fathers God, to thee, Author of Liberty, to thee we sing, Long may our land be bright With freedoms holy light, Protect us by thy might, Great God our King. The page is signed ''S F. Smith'' and dated ''1832'', both pages are completed entirely in his hand in a purple fountain pen. The pages measure 4.25 x 3.25 inches, with trivial toning and a single see-through glue spot at the bottom of page two, overall, in very good condition and display very nicely. The signed lyrics have been authenticated by JSA Authentication and will be accompanied with the above Letter of Authenticity. Mounted below is a professionally engrave plaque which reads as follows, Samuel Francis Smith October 21, 1808 - November 16, 1895. Samuel Francis Smith was an American Baptist minister, journalist and author. Smith produced many literary works, mainly in the line of hymnology, his most noted composition being the national hymn ''America'', ''My Country, Tis of Thee'' which was written while he was a theological student in 1832''. The display has been professionally assembled in a grey linen mat and accented with a blue and a burgundy inner mat. The display has been completed in an ornate burgundy wood frame to the dimensions of 18.00 x 17.00 inches.
