Description: Russian Population in Alaska & California, Late 18th Century (1867) by Svetlana G. Fedorova 1973 English Translation1st Edition A wonderful history of the Russian presence in Alaska and California in what is now Sonoma and Mendocino counties that was originally compiled in 1867. Through the efforts of the editor and translators and many others, I would imagine, this wonderful account was brought back to life. It oddly appears typewritten and compiled like a scholarly report with many illustrations in the back as well as an index and appendices. Though all that sounds a bit daunting, it is wonderfully readable and of great interest not only to my local area near the Sonoma Coast, but to anyone wishing a rare and special peek at the past. This book was signed by a local Russian Orthodox Priest on the occasion of a visit to the area by the grandson of another Priest who had been awarded sainthood for his work in North America during the period the book covers. That story is told in the Press Democrat article written by Gaye LeBaron, the rather legendary columnist and local historian. Also included is a postcard of Fort Ross, where the Russians had set up their operations. I've taken two pictures of the article so it's easy for you to read.
