Description: This is a silver drachm issued in the Masicytus monetary district within the Lycian League, a provincial region of the Roman empire at the time. The coin was issued under Augustus in 27-20 BC and bears a nice portrait of him on the obverse. On the reverse are two citharas (like a lyre), a plectrum (basically a guitar pick for lyres) above and between them, and MA below. This particular assortment of reverse symbols and letters is rare. The Lycian league (Mediterranean coastal area of modern Turkey) was a confederation of independent city-states and is hailed as the first such democratic union in history. The league was famously cited in debates about the US federation of states by James Madison. Masicytus was a monetary district within the league. Details: AR Drachm of Masicytus, Lycian League (3.07g). 27-20 BC. Obv: bare head to right; Λ-Υ across fields. Rev: two citharas; plectrum above and between; MA below (MA for Masicytus). Troxell, Lycian League, 120.14; cf. RPC I 3309c. Good Very Fine. Extremely Rare with this arrangement of symbols and letters; seemingly no other examples on CoinArchives. ***Argenteus Rare Coins guarantees for life that all coins that it sells are authentic and genuine***
