Description: Hope is the thing with feathers,That perches in the soul,And sings the tune without the words,And never stops at all... Here we offer a complete set of first editions of Poems by Emily Dickinson, including the First, Second, and Third Series. These were printed in three bindings, grey, green, and beige-and-green. This beige-and-green edition bound the first and second series in one binding, so there are two volumes in all. The copyright pages on these refer to a print run as "edition", as was common in London and less common in the US in the day, so the First Series is a stated 1893 "Thirteenth Edition," which, in modern parlance, is a first edition, 13th printing. The Second Series is an earlier 1891 "Seventh Edition," or a first edition, 7th print; and the Third Series is an 1896 stated "Second Edition", or first edition, 2nd print. These were published by the collection's original publisher, Roberts Brothers, Boston. These were particularly attractive editions, with impressed, gilted, and decorative silk boards, high-quality paper, gilt all the way around the text block (to keep dust out), and the Second Series includes an introductory section with a facsimile of the author's handwriting. These books originally came with an ivory grosgrain placeholding ribbon that degraded and fell out within a decade. As a very special bonus, the placeholding ribbons have been replaced with acid-free ribbons that perfectly match the originals in color and pattern. Boards are soiled and edgeworn, especially at the spine cloths, which have most of the gilt rubbed away and are darkened (please see pics.) Endpages bear period inscriptions, and the front gutter of the Third Series has been split and resealed securely with binder's sealant. Bindings are very tight and square, and all original hinges are firm. Minor foxing and a few light pencil marks. Text is very clean, bright, and crisp. 152, 230, and 200 pages, respectively. The books measure approximately 7 x 4.75-inches. This scarce set of iconic firsts will make a wonderful centerpiece to your collection or a very special and thoughtful gift!
