Description: **** P I T C A I R N I S L A N D S **** [C] 11 NOVEMBER 1951 Commercial Ship Cover to New Zealand FINE/VERY FINE CONDITION Sc.#1, S.G. 1 THE COVER: was mailed from the New Zealand Shipping Company's MS RANGITOTO (New Zealand Shipping Co.), which called at Pitcairn on 28 October 1951, on its regular service route from England, via the Panama Canal, to Wellington, New Zealand. After sorting at the post office, the cover was postmarked on 11 November, to await Pitcairn's next mail collection by the first ship to call. This was the SS MATAROA (Shaw, Savill & Albion Line) on 15 November, bound for Auckland, N.Z. THE FRANKING: A strip of three ½d 'orange cluster' KGVI stamps, plus the extra ½d stamp, exceeded the 1½d letter rate to British Empire/Commonwealth destinations. The extra ½d stamp at the extreme left, folded round the reverse side, received an unintended (partial) postmark. THE ½d STAMP: is from the 1949 3rd printing of the this value, which was produced on thicker, less white paper than the previous 2nd (wartime) printing, which was made on thin very white paper (1944).
