It has delicious edible leaves and flowers. This perennial plant grows in an upright, leggy manner up to 6 feet tall, but looks best pruned back to maintain a small bushy shape. The plant tolerates some shade, is highly resistant to root-knot nematodes, is not affected by pests or diseases, tolerates drought conditions, easy to start from seed and is a great container plant. The burgundy leaf color is similar in appearance to Japanese Maple leaves. For best leaf color, place this shrub in a sunny spot. Without full sun, the leaves do not attain their best color. They also produce a beautiful pink & red, edible flower. Harsh frosts can kill the plant. The young, shiny, burgundy leaves can be used raw in salads, as a wrap, in teas or gently stir fried. Leaves have a very pleasant flavor and are tangy/sweet and delicious. You can place them on a sandwich or just pop them in your mouth when wandering in the garden.These seeds are grown organically in my backyard Florida garden.
