Description: Antique Store Card Civil War Token During the Civil War, the gradual withdrawal of metallic money from circulation created a shortage of small change. Merchants filled the need with privately minted tokens. This emergency money was generally made in copper and commonly accepted in trade. It was distributed in the U.S. between 1861 and 1864. Civil war tokens became illegal to use in trade after Congress passed a law in 1864.Civil War tokens are most valued when in good condition for age and for their rarity. This is an original "Store Card" Civil War Token. The obverse side of this coin says, "BW Titus, 20 E State St, Trenton, NY", and the reverse is "Dry Good, Oil Cloths, Carpets". This token is in very good condition with a light patina'd copper color. The token measures about 18 mm (3/4 inch) in diameter. It is in very good condition with all letters and pictures highly readable. It comes with Civil War Token snap case.
