Description: This pouch measures 6 x 5 inches and is in excellent condition with no bead loss; the red cloth on the outside is undoubtedly faded from its original color but the piece looks great as it is. My wife says the animal is a beaver because it is carrying a branch and she might be correct but I also have some feeling that it might be a badger because of the coloration and what seems like a bushy tail to me. In our over 80 years we've seen plenty of beavers and a few badgers but no agreement here. It was probably a Niagra Falls area souvenir as indicated by the word "souvenir" on the back of the bag. We've handled a lot of beadwork over the years and this is a particularly fine example and well worth the starting price (which is quite a bit below what we paid for the piece at auction years ago). Update: I have been informed by a leading expert that this bag was probably made on the Mohawk reservation near Montreal aboui 1920. She also said that she has seen beadwork beavers on similar work but never with a tail like this one, so I will stick to my badger theory.
