Description: About MerryvaleMerryvale Fabric Packets were produced monthly from 1993 to 2007. They featured fabrics selected from a new fabric collection created for quilt making. They are cut into six-inch squares and usually contained 26 pieces. Fabric collections rotated to present quilters with a variety of new fabrics being produced by leading companies in the industry. In selecting from individual fabric collections, quilters became aware of designers’ intent regarding coordinated scale of prints and colorways. This Merryvale PacketGustav Klimt Designs: House Designer using the art of Gustav KlimtProduced By: Woodrow Studio London, EnglandPacket No: 114Year: 2001Size: 6" x 6"Pieces: 26NewsletterTHE KLIMT COLLECTION, produced by the Woodrow Studio of London, was inspired by the work of an Austrian-born artist named Gustav Klimt (1862-1918). Particularly sought after for his work in the field of architectural decoration, Klimt also considerably influenced other decorative arts in Austria. Many of his paintings were large allegorical canvases, which combined linear construction with rich colors. Often he included beautiful women and nudes against a bejeweled background. Klimt’s works are often recognized by extravagant flowery fields, unusual textures, geometric patterns, and flat metallics, which create a very decorative surface. He then breaks the rich surface with a subject, bringing the focus in on intimate detail painted with a delicate subtlety. One of Klimt’s most famous paintings depicting timeless romance is “The Kiss” (1907-1908). This work has been successfully recreated in fabrics with lavish surface embellishment and is shown on the cover of our Merryvale newsletter. A poster of “The Kiss” was divided horizontally into ten equal strips and ten quilt artists worked independently to recreate their given portion of the original. The finished quilt, “Our Klimt,” has appeared in quilt shows in Lancaster, PA, Williamsburg, VA, and Somers, NY. Quilt artists are Patricia Brause, Gail Givan, Patricia Hanson, Alice Harrington, Adelaide Johnson, Judy Kozlowicki, Carole Nicholas, June Ohlson, Mary Pace, and Joyce Robb. The Klimt Collection offers realistic fabric adaptations of Gustav Klimt’s work and Merryvale has added eight British Basics for enhanced coordination.
