Fast-curing formula is great for filling, fairing, shaping, and repair applications on properly prepared fiberglass, wood, aluminum, steel & existing 2-component paints and primers in good condition. Fairing removes the highs and lows so a surface is level or 'fair'. It can mean filling holes and shallow voids, reshaping contours or grinding down bumps to blend in with the surrounding surface. TotalBoat TotalFair is a versatile epoxy fairing compound and filler ideal for boat building and repairs above and below the waterline. Its simple 1:1 mix ratio is easy to get right - even for beginners, and it won't sag on vertical or overhead surfaces. Here are a few of its many uses: Fill & fair small gouges and dents on wood, fiberglass, aluminum, & steel hulls before priming/painting.Fair the entire hull surface during wooden boat construction or repairs.Smooth out gelcoat imperfections above the waterline, prior to painting.Fill gelcoat blisters below the waterline before finishing with an epoxy barrier coat and antifouling bottom paint.Reshape and fair damaged underwater appendages such as the rudder and keel for added speed.Fill holes after removing hardware. When it's solid green, it's ready to use. We made the components of TotalFair brightly colored so it's easy to tell when the fairing compound is properly mixed. The epoxy component (Part A) is yellow and the hardener component (Part B) is blue. Just combine 1 part epoxy to 1 part hardener in equal parts by volume & mix thoroughly with an epoxy spreader or putty knife until the putty is a solid green color. When it's green, it ready to go. At 80°F, it's ready to sand in just 3 hours. TotalFair is best applied in temperatures from 50-100°F, but you'll find it easiest to spread in temperatures above 60°F. At 80°F, it's ready to sand in just 3 hours. Another thing to note is the time you have to spread and shape TotalFair. Working life is dependent on temperature, so measure and mix only as much TotalFair as you can apply during the working life indicated for your conditions. TotalBoat TotalFair Epoxy Fairing Compound Features: 2-part epoxy putty for marine fairing, filling & shaping projects. Compare to System 3 QuikFair, Interlux Watertite Epoxy Filler, Awlgrip Awlfair & Pettit EZ-Fair. Simple 1:1 mix ratio by volume makes it easy for DIY boat owners and pros alike. The yellow & blue components turn a solid green when mixed properly, indicating it's ready to use. No-drag, no-sag formula is easy to spread, great for skim coating. Apply to properly prepared fiberglass, wood, aluminum, steel, & existing 2-part paints & primers. Cured TotalFair has minimal shrinkage, and can be sanded, primed, or painted. Available in 2-Pint, 2-Quart & Gallon (1/2 gal resin, 1/2 gal hardener) Kits for large & small jobs. Fiberglass Surface Prep The surface must be clean, dry, and free of all dust, dirt, grease, oil, and other contaminants.Grind or sand the surface with 80-grit or coarser sandpaper.Remove all sanding residue. Thoroughly wipe the surface clean with denatured alcohol or acetone. Wood Surface Prep The surface must be clean, dry, and free of all dust, dirt, grease, oil, and other contaminants.Sand the surface to be faired using a coarse sandpaper of 80-grit (or coarser).Remove all sanding residue. For white oak or any oily hardwoods, wipe the surface clean with acetone prior to application. Aluminum Surface Prep Thoroughly sand or blast bare aluminum to bright, shiny metal.Remove all sanding or blasting residue (brush, vacuum, or sweep).STRONGLY RECOMMENDED: Apply TotalBoat Aluminum Etch Wash, as directed, for maximum barrier coat adhesion.Apply TotalFair within 1 hour after using TotalBoat Aluminum Etch Wash. Steel Surface Prep The surface must be clean, dry, and free of all dust, dirt, grease, oil, and other contaminants.Thoroughly sandblast or grind.Remove all sanding or blasting residue. Wipe the surface clean with acetone or denatured alcohol. TotalBoat TotalFair is easy to mix, easy to apply, and easy to sand smooth. Add equal parts Part A (yellow) and Part B (blue) to a clean surface. Always start with clean tools and mixing surfaces.Use separate wooden sticks to dispense the resin and hardener, so as not to contaminate either component. The proper mix ratio is 1:1 by volume. Add 1 part of the Yellow Resin (Part A) and 1 part of the Blue Hardener (Part B) to a clean surface.TotalFair is very forgiving, don't be intimidated, just eyeball the amounts and get as close as you can. Mix both parts thoroughly till the putty is a solid green color. Use a clean plastic epoxy spreader or a putty knife to mix the two components for 3-5 minutes, or until the putty is a solid green color, with no blue or yellow swirls. While mixing, be sure not to whip excessive air into the mixture, which can cause bubbles and voids.Measure and mix only as much compound as you can use in the working time appropriate for your application temperature (15-20 min. @ 90°F; 30 min. @ 70°F; 45-60 min. @ 50°F). Spread evenly and not too thick. Build depth with multiple applications. Apply TotalFair in temperatures from 50-100°F. It's easier to spread in warmer temperatures.Filling holes up to 3/4" may require a second pass, once cured. When fairing a large gouge (maximum depth fill), we recommend a 6:1 width-to-depth ratio per application. For deep/narrow areas that exceed 6:1, apply TotalFair in stages (3/8"-1/2" max.depth).To apply another layer of TotalFair, wait a few hours until the previous layer is almost sandable but not fully cured. Sand, remove residue, and overcoat with primer, epoxy primer, or paint. We recommend sanding TotalFair as soon as TotalFair is cured enough to sand: 3 hrs. @ 80°F; 6-8 hrs. @ 70°F; 12 hrs. @ 50°F.If cured TotalFair is allowed to sit more than two days, it can become harder to sand.Overcoat sanded TotalFair with paint, primer, epoxy primer, or more TotalFair. After use, reseal containers tightly and store at 60-90°F in a cool, dry place. In cold weather, store products on a raised surface off the floor and away from outside walls. Frequently Asked Questions Q: How soon will TotalFair be ready to sand? A: At 80°F, TotalFair is ready to sand in just 3 hours. Q: Can I apply gelcoat over cured TotalFair? A: No. Gelcoat will not cure properly if applied directly to cured TotalFair. Before applying gelcoat, overcoat TotalFair with an epoxy barrier coat or epoxy surfacing primer such as TotalBoat TotalProtect or TotalBoat 2-Part Epoxy Primer. Q: Fiberglass hulls tend to flex with use and in certain conditions. How does TotalFair stand up? A: It cures to a hard material that holds up well, and has a high tolerance for flexibility. Q: Over the winter, my containers of resin & hardener got clumps in them. Can I still use them? A: Storing TotalFair in temperatures below 60°F causes crystallization, which can be fixed by placing the sealed tub of TotalFair into a few inches of water heated to 150°F (or put tub in a zipper-type plastic bag and remove all air in the bag before placing it in hot water); add hot water as needed to maintain 150°F temp. 3.5 inches x 6.7 inches x 3.5 inches.
