Hanson, Chancellor, and stamped with a small wax seal. 12 x 13 in., approx. 370 words, with a few corrections and additions to text. Old fold lines, with a few short breaks and some longer separation across the central fold, with a bit of loss to a word or two. Witnessed by Thomas Wallace. Docketed on verso. The indenture confirms the transfer of part of a lot of ground in the town of Elkton, Maryland which Randolph Brant Latimer [sp?], as agent for the state of Maryland had sold the ground rent on to Stephen Hyland in 1793. The town lot was originally part of a tract of land called "Friendship," and consisted of "two roods and thirty five perches and a half of ground, more or less." Contee confirms the sale to Hyland for the sum of thirty pounds. Alexander Contee Hanson (1749-1806) was the son of John Hanson, a signer of the Articles of Confederation and the first President of the Confederation's Congress. Alexander Contee Hanson studied law in Annapolis, served as an assistant private secretary to Gen. George Washington in 1776, and was appointed Chancellor of Maryland in 1789, serving in that capacity until his death.
