Description: Knox County, Ohio and U.S. Medical History - Manuscript by Dr. John Russell 1882 Handwritten manuscript of a speech delivered by Dr. John W. Russell, Sr., to the Rocky Mountain Medical Association, dated June 6, 1882. The manuscript is written in pen and is 15 pages long. Each page is a sheet of lined paper measuring about 7 7/8" x 9 15/16". Each sheet has an embossed seal on the upper left-hand corner that says "Supreme Quality." Each page is numbered at the top in pen. The writing is on only one side of each page. There is some soiling/fading at the bottom of page 1. Otherwise, the pages are clear and legible as shown. Dr. John W. Russell (1804 - 1887) was a noted physician who graduated from Jefferson Medical College in 1827. During the Civil War, he was the Examining Surgeon for soldiers who enlisted from Knox County. According to the obituary published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, Dr. Russell was "a man of indefatigable industry. During his life he probably performed more physical and mental labor than the majority of his contemporaries, in and out of the profession." Dr. Russell's work "did not begin with the rising or close with the setting sun, and the day usually allotted to rest found him actively engaged. In his early practice he visited his patients on horseback." Later, after injuring his knee, in a carriage pulled by two mules, Dr. Russell "scaled the hills of Knox and adjoining counties for half a century." During the sixty years of his professional life, Dr. Russell instructed more than 300 medical students and was known as a "most capable and thorough office preceptor." He died, as many had predicted, “in the harness,” having prescribed for patients up to within 48 hours of his death. The speech begins with Dr. Russell's memories of the AMA meeting in San Francisco in May 1871. Russell then lists members who died in the interim and cites the cause of death. He moves on to more detailed eulogies for Drs. George Means, Benjamin H. Catlin, Henry M. Knight, and J.C. Hughes. The speech closes with a discussion of the qualities of an ideal physician. Of note, Dr. Russell states that "the physician ought to be a magnanimous humanitarian -- cheerfully visiting the poorest outcast where no pecuniary award is in prospect."
