Description: RARE AUTOGRAPH JOHN H. YEE (1921 - 2019) WWII Flying Tigers Radio Interpreter/Translator Signed 4x6 Photo with Hand-written Inscriptions on Front PHOTO IS IN A RIGID PVC HOLDER, ALLOWING VIEWING OF BOTH SIDES I am downsizing and selling autographs from my 30+ years of collecting. John Yee joined the famed Flying Tigers at age 19, acting as an interpreter for American military aviator Claire Lee Chennault. Working mostly in flight control, listening to messages radioed from farmers who spotted Japanese planes. Yee then plotted the reported sightings on a grid to determine when, and from which direction, the Japanese planes would arrive over Kunming. On Dec. 20, 1941, just two weeks after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, 10 Japanese bombers left Hanoi (in what was then French Indochina), headed for Kunming, unaware of what awaited them. From the ground, Yee saw multiple Japanese fighter planes fall from the sky, casualties of the Flying Tigers. “For the first time in the history of the war, the Japanese had been shot down,” Yee said in an interview, “That put some joy into the Chinese.” Before the Flying Tigers AVG disbanded July 4, 1942, members, including Yee, received a pin with the famed group logo - a "V" for victory with a winged tiger in the middle - designed by Walt Disney. Yee was also a member of the 14th U.S. Air Force from 1942-1944 (which was also commanded by Chennault), as well as being a member of the Chinese Air Force from 1940-1947. After the war, Yee came to the U.S. and became a teacher in Colorado, and is considered the first public school teacher between the east and west coasts of America to teach Chinese language, culture and history, and won numerous teaching and distinguished citizen awards. In 2015, Yee received a medal from the People’s Republic of China, Central office of Military Affairs, in recognition of his World War II service.
