Bisexual, he married Margaret Hoening in 1937, also an artist, and for the next eight years his research deepened photography, forming a collective called PAJAMA (Paul, Jared, and Margaret). During the New Deal he worked for the Roosevelt WPA Works Progress Administration, creating murals on commission. He was always driven by a strong interest first for the male world in its physicality and concreteness, then for its intimate imagery under the influence of Jungian studies.
