Description: Japanese Uchishiki Embroidered Buddhist Altar Tablecloth This is a vintage Japanese Buddhist altar tablecloth, or uchishiki. Made of silk, the backside has a white chrysanthemum and paulownia floral design. The main part is largely gold with small chrysanthemums and large peonies in red, teal, and coral colors. Like the chrysanthemum, peonies (botan) are a common feature in traditional Japanese designs and symbolize wealth and prosperity. Uchishiki is mainly used by followers of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism as the upper table (Maejyoku) and the front table (Uwajyoku) in the Buddhist altar during events such as New Year's Day, the equinoctial week, Obon, and memorial services.
