Carleton S. Coon draws upon a lifetime of study and fieldwork in physical and cultural anthropology and archaeology to present the hunting peoples in all their divergence and similarities. He discusses their tools and methods of hunting, fishing and gathering, they ways they transport themselves on land and water, and their procedures for cooking and preserving food. He analyzes their social and political organizations, the ways internal and external peace are kept through territories, bands, and kinship, their marriage and trade relationships and rites of passage from birth to death. He also takes a close look at their seasonal ceremonies, shamans, and the great networks of gods, spirits, and myths which are so vital to every hunting culture. Throughout Professor Coon’s prose is simply and direct, his explanations of complex matters refreshingly clear. He can describe how to grind a stone axe head, the origin of fire according to the Tasmanians, how the Andamanese weave rope with their toes, or the process of wooing among the Akoa Pygmies with a humor, skepticism, and sympathetic objectivity that is both scholarly yet non-technical. The Hunting Peoples is illustrated with thirty-three line drawings and six maps and contains extensive notes and bibliography. CONDITION: VERY GOOD. Clean, lightly read hardcover with dustjacket (in new mylar sleeve). Atlantic-Little (1971) 413 pages. Looks like the original owner read the first 102 pages of the book, then put it away and never finished it. Pages are pristine; clean, crisp, unmarked, unmutilated, tightly bound, seemingly only partly read, HOWEVER the original owner did emboss their name and address at the lower corner of the first page of the book (which depicts a map of the world but no text). The tan-colored cloth covers are clean and unblemished. The dustjacket however evidences moderate shelfwear, though you could say it performed it's function admirably and protected the cloth covers. The dustjacket evidences some chipping and rubbing to the corners, as well as to the spine head and heel (particularly the spine head). These are all very tiny chips, neatly mended. There's also a (neatly repaired) 2 inch closed edge tear to the back side of the dustjacket right at the spine head with some accompanying crease/fold marks. Again, this has been neatly repaired (but is still discernible), and we have encased the dustjacket into a new mylar sleeve so as to prevent any further damage. After receiving his PhD in 1928 from Harvard University, through 1939 he was engaged in fieldwork and anthropological research in Arabia, the Balkans, and North Africa, where he discovered in 1939 the remains of a Neanderthal.
