Description: Archive of 1970s Dyeing & Tanning Technical Notes & Records from an American Chemist. DISCUSSION: An archive of material assembled by John Balutel, mostly from his work at W.D. Byron & Sons, tanners & dyers, of of Williamsport, Maryland. Balutel graduated Cum Laude from the European Polytechnical Institute and worked at several tanning companies in the 1960s; he worked at W.D. Byron & Sons in Williamsport, Maryland from 1971-1974 (roughly the period covered by most of this material) as Technical Director, and Director of Research and Development (Byron would go into bankruptcy in 1976, in part due to the costs of new environmental regulations). After leaving Byron, Balutel worked as a free-lance consultant. This archive consists of: -Sandoz Fashion Shades for Leather 3” Binder containing Sandoz booklets and manuals, leather samples, and other related material from 1971/72; -Sandoz Fashion Shades for Leather 3” Binder containing Sandoz samples and related material from 1972-73; -Sandoz Fashion Shades for Leather 3” Binder containing BASF 1972/3 Technical Bulletins with leather samples, and related material; -Vinyl 3” 3-ring binder mostly consisting of handwritten notes and company forms accompanied by leather samples, as well as some BASF Technical Bulletins and samples; -Vinyl 1.5” 3-ring binder containing chemical company dyeing bulletins and information; -Vinyl 2.5” 3-ring binder containing handwritten notes, correspondence, and forms and leather samples relating to dyes and dyeing; -Vinyl 2.5” 3-ring binder containing brochures and other material related to tanning, processing, and dyeing machinery; -Semi-limp 2” 3-ring binder containing material and samples relating to damage to leather from chemicals and other sources; -Leatherette 1.5” 3-ring binder containing early 1980s material related to John Balutels development of a consulting company for the leather industry; -Leatherette 1.5” 3-ring binder containing c.1971 technical notes and printed information for the leather industry; -Leatherette 1.5” 3-ring binder containing c.1979 Rohm and Sandoz company materials related to the dyeing of mink and other fur, and many apparently personally-made samples of dyed furs; -2” 3-ring binder frame (binder covers perished) containing handwritten notes and company forms on dyeing, with leather samples; -Vinyl .5” 3-ring binder containing printed material from various sources concerning cattle hides; -Card binder containing about 2” of handwritten notes, company forms, and samples relating to shoe and garment leather; -Folder of blueprints of the Byron plant layout and related subjects; -Folder of notes and material about tanning; -Folder of handwritten notes, titled “MSOE Milwaukee School of Engineering Leather Technology Research Dept. Vol.1; -Rebound Bayer C-RFP Process booklet with added handwritten notes and corrections; -Rohm ‘Fur Dressing’ folder with loose plates; -A 1.5” stack of notes and forms regarding chemical formulas. - - About 20 items, an archive of working materials, with expected wear and soil.
