Dr. Borsodi was one of the first people to advocate a return to rural living as an antidote to the ills of modern living. He put his thoughts into actions and he and his family moved back to a rural area during the great Depression and thrived. He did not advocate the denial of modern conveniences, nor did he ignore the drudgery of some aspects of rural life, what he did was work out a compromise that allowed people to take the best from both worlds. Escape from The City is an easy to read guide on how he and his family learned to make and do all the necessities of life on their own that they were able to and to purchase or trade for those things they could not provide for themselves. He grew most of his own food, built his house from stone found on his own land and often made his families clothes from cloth they made on a simple loom. Food, water and clothing were provided by their own efforts, they did not need to trade their life away in a factory or cubicle for the necessities of life, they were as independent as people could be with much free time for the simple pleasures of life. Eventually he had a large group of like minded people gathered together in a community. In time they even began to mint their own money for trade amongst themselves. If you are an independent minded person that is annoyed at the constant compromises needed to get by in today's society you need to read more on Ralph Borsodi. The Mother Earth News and those in the back to the land movement in the 1970/s recognized Borsodi for his attempt to make an independent self sufficient life in the midst of a world of mass consumerism and dependency on the government for everything. Not many others know about him and his writings. I think you will be glad you read him. He offered hope to a lot of people in the Great depression that there was an alternative to the boom and bust economic cycles. We can always use more hope. Independence versus Dependence A few Wikipedia words about who was Ralph Borsodi. "Dr. Ralph Borsodi was born in New York City, he spent the earliest years of his life in Manhattan. His father was a publisher who had connections in the advertising field, and Ralph worked in this business as a boy. By the age of 22, Borsodi was personally testing the idea of moving "back to the land." He had fully embraced the concept of "voluntary simplicity" (as it would now be called) by 1920. Dr. Borsodi is chiefly known for his practical experiments in self-sufficient living during the 1920s and 1930s, and for the books he wrote about these experiments. This Ugly Civilization and Flight from the City are his best known works. He established a School of Living in Rockland County, New York during the winter of 1934–1935. Before long about 20 families began attending regularly from New York City, spending the weekends at the school. Some commentators claim Borsodi's books inspired "hundreds of thousands of people" to follow his example during the Great Depression. In 1948 Borsodi self published, even doing his own typesetting, "Education and Living" a two-volume work designed to suggest a curriculum for the ongoing School of Living. Dr. Borsodi spent decades analyzing the ills of modern society and imagining remedies for the problems. His 1968 work, published in India, and titled Seventeen Universal Problems of Man and Society, catalogued his research and can be considered the beginning of a modern taxonomy of human problems and solutions. His followers felt he usually was working at solving problems at least 20 years before most analysts realized the problem existed. For example, it is said he predicted the inflation of the 1970s some thirty years before it came. One of his interests was in local currencies, and he started an experiment with such a currency in his home area, Exeter, New Hampshire. Borsodi and Swann did establish a local, alternative currency in Exeter; however, the project came to an early end with Borsodi's failing health. Borsodi was an early thinker delving into the problem of modern industrial society plundering non-renewable resources, suggesting that our societies should explore the use of renewable resources. Borsodi was cited as an important modern critic and creative thinker by Helen and Scott Nearing in such writings as Living the Good Life, a book sometimes credited as being the clarion call of the back-to-the-land movement of the 1970s. J.I. Rodale, who founded Organic Gardening and Farming magazine got his introduction to organic gardening at Borsodi's Dogwood Acres Homestead, as did the Keene family, founders of Walnut Acres organic food catalog. Borsodi died in Exeter, NH in October 1977, survived by his wife Clare and two sons - Edward M. and Ralph W. - by his first wife Myrtle Mae Simpson." I am also including on this CD Borsodi's other equally famous book, This Ugly Civilization , with twenty three chapters on the same subject. Both books are in the Adobe pdf format and can be read on any computer. ................................................................................................. ....You probably will continue as before. And so shall 1. But I, at least, am free to continue the quest of comfort on my own small domain--mine as long as I can scrape together the taxes, which the state levies upon it. I, at least, have the opportunity to work out a manner of living for myself without regard to the life that landlords, tradesmen, and manufacturers would impose upon me. I, at least, can say to the factory: "Get thee hence. I want thy riches not, because I need them not." @ A comfortable home in which to labor and to play, with trees and grass and flowers and skies and stars; a small garden; a few fruit trees; some fowls, some kine, some bees; and three big dogs to keep the salesmen out--and I, at least, have time for love, for children, for a few friends, and for the work I like to do. More the world can give to no man, and more no man can give the world. THE END Both of these books are in an eBook format and can be read on any PC or Mac with the free adobe reader. If your computer does not have the Adobe reader it can be downloaded for free at Adobe.com On Feb-23-10 at 08:34:45 PST, seller added the following information: Use the FREE Counters 1 million sellers do - Vendio!
