Description: GEORGE II STERLING SILVER TANKARD 1752 Fabulous crested sterling silver pint mug or tankard from the George II period. Clear set of hallmarks for: London 1752 Makers mark is I*A which is the mark registered for: John Alderhead (1751-1772) Also engraved with the number 3 and under this 12=15 (no idea what this means but not repair marks as they are always lightly scratched on). Made from a very good gauge of solid Georgian silver with C-scroll handle applied to bulbous body that is decorated with a riot of chased and embossed flowers, leaves and sea shells interspersed with C-scrolls which also frame the cartouche at the front which is engraved with a crest. The shield crest has a motto at the base: TRUSTY AND TRUE I found a reference for this motto in The Book of Family Crests (see below). This is one of or the oldest piece of silver we collected in 30 years of trading. We purchased it dull and unpolished as you see it in the photographs. It never went out for sale and we felt that to remove all those decades and possibly centuries of ‘patina’ that has developed would be a negative thing not a positive and so we are leaving this to the next custodian to “clean or not to clean- that is the question”. CONDITION In very good to excellent antique condition with few if any signs of use but patina totally displays its age. Clear set of hallmarks. It has been Crested. No dents, dings, splits or repairs on the body or handle that I could see after inspecting it with a magnifying glass. The foot rim has one short section About 1cm long that has received a bump and so a tiny bit flatter than the rest but hey, after nearly 300 years this is not a big deal and of no real consequence, only mentioning for accuracy of description. DIMENSIONS It measures approximately: 12.4cm (4 7/8") high Base or foot rim is approx: 9.5cm (3 ¾ ") wide It measures across handle to rim: 12.4cm (4 7/8") across It weighs: 377.6 grams (12.14 troy ounces) ####### THE BOOK OF FAMILY CRESTS Digitized by the Internet Archive 2016 (thank you for that) Approx. 4000 engravings Page 135 Trusty and True....... Scot. This is all it says. No other clues as to who it belongs to but it’s not a clan motto from what I quickly researched so has to be either a city/town motto or a family one. It’s filled with an enormous number of family names and descriptions of their mottos with engravings to match to at least some of them but you have to know the name to find the engraving of crest not the other way round. It would take days and days to go through the 1000s of names and their descriptions and I’m way too old to go through them all, I’ll be dead before I finish! >>>>>>1896<<<<<< We guarantee our descriptions are accurate and our prices competitive.
