Description: French Republic Uniform Coat Button Description: Nice example of a French First Republic military uniform button. These were used in just about every branch of service and are the equivalent of the U.S. General Service buttons. These were first adopted during the French First Republic and were still in use up through the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte during the First Empire. The button features a fasces in the center with a Phrygian cap on top flanked by branches of laurel and oak. The emblem is surrounded by the words "REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE” with a rope border edge. There are several variants of this button as well as a few different types of shanks used. Obviously, there were plenty of different manufacturers making these throughout France. This example with an integral cast and drilled turret shank.
