Description: Franklin Library leather edition of Samuel Beckett's "Three Plays," Illustrated by Avigdor Arikha, a Limited edition, one of the GREATEST BOOKS OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY series, published in 1981. Bound in hunter green leather, the book moire silk end leaves, a satin book marker, hubbed spine, acid-free paper, Symth-sewn binding, gold gilding on three edges---in near FINE condition---most would list as FINE. Samuel Barclay Beckett, who lived from 1906-1989, was born in Ireland, educated at TRINITY COLLEGE in 1927. Beckett taught for a short while in Belfast but moved to PARIS where he received his MA. "Paris in the twenties, Beckett has said, "was a good place for a young man to be." In Paris, he met JAMES JOYCE and they became best friends; they both were expatriate Irishmen and both had rejected the religions of their fathers. This volume includes three plays: "Waiting for Godot," a play with two men waiting for Godot---or God to return---which he never does; "Endgame," a play with four lost souls contemplating the end of the world from a bleak, empty cell, and "Krapp's Last Tape," a play with a "wearish old man" listening to a tape recording in an attempt to be happy. A reviewer once noted: "Some chronicle men on their way up; others tackle men on their way down. Samuel Beckett stalks after men on their way out." Combining the most heartrending situations with the burlesque humor of the music hall, Beckett portrays the desolation of modern man, human suffering and blending of despair. Beckett was awarded the French Prix Formentor in 1961 and the NOBEL PRIZE for Literature in 1969. 277 pages---a RARE title. I offer combined shipping.
