Description: ENRIQUE RIVERON. Painter. Sculptor. Cuban Art. 20th Century Art. (Cuba 1902 - U.S. 1998) • Title: Self-Portrait • Technique: Mixed media / Cardboard • Measurement: 6 ½ x 4 inches • Executed: 1922 • Signed: Riverón PROVENANCE Private collection, Havana, acquired from the original owner by the current owner. Enrique Riverón, a painter, sculptor, draftsman, and illustrator, was born in 1902 in Cienfuegos, Cuba, and belonged to the first generation of Cuban modernists. He experimented with cubism and pursued abstraction from an early stage in his career. When he was just over twenty years old, Riverón traveled to France, Italy, Belgium, and Spain to study with scholarships and attend the Academy of San Fernando in Madrid. In 1926, Riverón had his first major solo exhibition at the Association Paris Amerique Latine, where the introduction to the catalog was written by the prominent Mexican writer Alfonso Reyes. Critic Jesús Rosado expressed about this artist, "with a versatile trajectory that transits through graphic humor, design, illustration, abstract painting, collage, sculpture, artifact, and whose concepts would flow successively as unusual premonitions of cutting-edge trends, Riverón qualifies as a persistent pioneer of Cuban visual thought." This piece has the particularity of being considered a self-portrait of the artist, and the reverse has a note that authenticates the origin and is dated after the fact on January 23, 1947.
