Through the instruments one may find a mass of social comment and a dramatic account of medical history, culminating in Lister's victory over septicaemia which separates the instruments in this book from those of today. With the introduction of antisepsis and the eventual acceptance of sterilization for all instruments they necessarily became plainer and less interesting, the more decorative materials being precluded from use.This book is profuesly illustrated with 380 photographs originating from many different sources.(Publisher).
