Description: This is a 16 page original New York magazine/newspaper dated December, 1864 entitled "The Portrait Monthly. It was published by T.W. Strong, 98 Nassau Street, NY. There is much content about the Civil War including a poem and an article entitled "The Young Naval Hero" which was John Morgan McNamara. On the cover is an engraving of Roger A. Pryor - U.S. Representative, Confederate General and native of Virginia.The fourth page has a story and engraving of Brigadier General Louis Blenker and the fifth page has an engraving and article about Colonel Henry H. Berden of the First Regiment U.S. Sharpshooters. Page 4 also has an editorial by J.M. Reichard of Philadelphia. That page also has an article about deacon John Phillips of Sturbridge, Mass. "who was 104 years, 4 mnths and 9 days old on the 8th of November" and who voted in the election.Page 5 has a story about a secret female soldier who followed her love into the war and this:"The Last of the Old Stock - Mrs. Grissom, relict of Mr. James Grissom, of Granville County, NC died about September 15th. Her husband was a soldier in the Revolution. They were married several years before that war. She was about one hundred and fifteen years old."Page 6 has a large engraving of Honorable William Pennington, of New Jersey, "ex-Speaker of the House of Representatives, son of Capt. W.S. Pennington, of artillery fame during the siege of Yorktown, who died in 1826."Page 7 has engravings of Frances (Fanny) Wright D'Arusmont - female philosopher and Charles W. Morgan. There is also an article about Captain Finley Anderson, "recently appointed on the staff of General Hancock.The next two pages have engravings of the Honorable Edward Everett, Senator; Colonel Abram S. Vosburg, 71st NY; and James Fennimore Cooper, novelist.The last page has an engraving and article about "Ex-President Millard Fillmore".This item is in good condition.
