Description: an undated printing of "Confessions of an Opium Eater" by Thomas de Quincey.it is the 3rd edition of the book, which was greatly expanded on, by de Quincey, from the first edition, and was the last edition edited by himself before his death. this book is infamous for kiiiind of making narcotics sound amazing, only lightly veiling it with warnings..."don't do laudanum you guys you will be up all night partying with famous people and writing award winning literature like me its just terrible" sort of overall vibe."Confessions" is rumored to have caused the addictions and deaths of several other contemporary writers.check out the wiki page on this book, it's got a pretty interesting history. This particular printing, i haven't been able to find much info on. I know it's part of the Avon collection, one of those subscription/membership/club dealies that used to be popular, where they'd reprint best sellers all with matching covers. The Avon series was printed from 1845 to 1910, when the company went under. i BELIEVE this was printed in the late 1850s or 1860s.i couldn't find info on when the 3rd ed was first printed, but it would have been after 1856 (2nd ed) and before 1859 (his death). editions after 1859 usually make mention of his death in the preface/introduction, although this publisher may have just not bothered, or gotten the memo. so, the print date of this book is definitely between 1857 and 1910 and i realize how vague that is sorry. anyway, its a very interesting read. i flipped to a few random pages so you can see what the content is like. CONDITION: Overall, pretty good.some damage/wear to cover and spine. see pics. slight foxing at insides of covers, and pages yellowed at edges. textblock tight and clean.gilding on spine worn (it is hard to read the title). SPECS: about 7" x 5" x 1" thick.275 pages. also including my little notes of info i was able to get off the bookseller whom i bought this from, not that it really adds anything. check out my other eBay listings for more old and rare books from my personal collection.
