Description: For sale is an absolutely charming late Victorian oil painting. Circa 1880 in age. The painting is signed P. Klein . We are unsure of the attribution. There is a label on the back attributing the painting to Philipp Klein (1871 - 1907 of Germany but we don't see similar signatures to confirm. It seems more of an American Victorian painting, or perhaps Continental Europe as well. We are unsure. The painting itself is absolutely emotionally moving. It features a poignant scene of a chambermaid standing and reflecting on her life in front of a large mirror in an opulent Gilded Age Victorian mansion. Around her are the trappings of Victorian wealth. An opulent Victorian gold gilded marble topped console table under a hanging wall mirror. The console table topped by Important porcelain vases on each side Off to the side is luxurious red velvet fabrics draped over green satin lined Victorian chairs. The curtains also with gold threaded rope tie backs. Everything here suggesting opulence and wealth and an expression of the Gilded Age industrialist money. And in this setting stands a lonely modest woman. We believe she is a chambermaid. In these Gilded Age mansions the chambermaids were often supplied with decent clothing so as to fit in with the expensive surroundings of these large wealthy estates. Here, the chambermaid, in all her beauty, pauses after time spent dusting the expensive wares of the Victorian mansion to reflect on herself. She stands in front of the large gold gilded wall mirror and reflects on her life or perhaps, she just takes a short break to smile at herself. She certainly sees herself surrounded by the trappings of opulence and wealth. She knows undoubtedly that she is a servant to this lifestyle. One gets the sense if she is pondering her past?.... or perhaps her future? Is she wishing for more of herself? Or is she content working for the family that has provided a living for her? Clearly she is taking a moment to reflect on her life and the scene is beautifully poignant. The painting is oil on copper plate. Maybe tin, but we believe copper. Provenance: Property from a Private Park Ave. Collection The painting was certainly reframed at one point in its life. Being framed in a more vintage 1950s or 60s picture frame. While the frame does show the painting fairly well, we believe a gold gilded or ebonized black frame would be a better fit for this Victorian aged painting. Condition: The painting itself is in overall fine condition. The surface being covered in years and years of soiling, smoke and grime buildup. A good cleaning would suffice. After a cleaning, all of these colors would really pop. While we personally cannot attribute this painting to a particular artist, we believe the work stands on its own.
