Each had its great ambitions – to monopolize a bonanza; to make some obscure town the Chicago of the West; to build on across the continent, or at least into the next state. Eventually they all faded away.” Bonanza Railroads “preserves the past with exciting and colorful stories with anecdotes, illustrations, charts, and numerous black and white photographs.” Gilbert H. Kneiss (1899 – 1964) had a passion for railroads and locomotives. He joined the Railway and Locomotive Historical Society in 1929 and founded the Pacific Coast Chapter in 1937. At the New York World’s Fair “Railroads on Parade” and at the San Francisco International Exposition’s “Cavalcade of America” he was the technical director. He later became the assistant to the president and heard of the new public relations department for the Western Pacific Railroad and authored two books during this time.
