It's a wonderfully rough-and-tumble affair that shows his shared roots with Ronnie Lane in the Faces. McLagan is a fine writer and expressive singer, and the set is full of relentlessly rocking, richly soulful numbers. Exuberant background vocals lend excitement to the songs, many of which sound like old classics. McLagan's keyboards are a prime feature, with his Hammond organ pumping ferociously with the rhythm section, occasionally taking concise but spine-tingling solos. There are guest appearances from Ronnie Wood, Billy Bragg, and Damnations TX. The warm and honest BEST OF BRITISH is at once is loose around the edges and classy. Professional Reviews: Q (4/00, p.96) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...it occupies the same boozy territory once commanded by The Faces, an impression only heightened by McLagan's Rod-like vocals....[It] evokes the requisite bawdy abandon..." No Depression (5-6/00, pp.112-3) - "...A getting-back-to-roots affair. Elements of funky R&B surface alongside traditional pub-rock, gospel and blues, and the whole package is delivered in a relaxed, low-key manner....[He's] grown old gracefully and still making fine music..."
