Description: Beautiful antique rare bronze medal with high reliefs of D. Afonso I, King of Portugal, the founder.Afonso Henriques, nicknamed "the Conqueror" and "Founding King", was the first king of Portugal. He was called "King of the Portuguese" from 1139 and reigned de jure from 5 October 1143, with the signing of the Treaty of Zamora, until his death. His role as sovereign was granted by the papal bull Manifestis Probatum of 23 May 1179. Previously he was Count of Portucale, from 1112 until his independence from the Kingdom of León. He was the son of D. Henrique, Count of Portucale and his wife D. Teresa de Leão, who, on the death of Count D. Henrique, "quickly ascended to the government of the county, which confirms the hereditary character that it had".After his father's death in 1112, King Afonso took a political position opposite to that of his mother, who had allied herself with the Galician nobleman Fernão Peres de Trava. Intending to secure the control of the county, he armed himself as a knight and after defeating his mother in the battle of São Mamede, in 1128, he took over the government. He then concentrated his efforts on obtaining recognition as a kingdom. In 1139, after the victory in the battle of Ourique against a Moorish contingent, Afonso Henriques proclaimed himself King of the Portuguese from 1140, after being acclaimed by his followers, and his independence from the Kingdom of León was recognized with the Treaty of Zamora. Portuguese independence was granted in 1179 by Pope Alexander III, through the bull Manifestis Probatum and attributed the title of rex (king). With the support of northern European crusaders, he conquered Lisbon in 1147. With internal pacification, he continued the conquests of the Moors, pushing the borders south, from Leiria to the Alentejo, more than doubling the territory he had inherited. Muslims called him ibn Arriq ("son of Henry", literal translation of the patronymic Henry) or Bortucali ("the Portuguese"). This medal was made in 1985 by the notable portuguese sculptor Cabral Antunes, laureate with national and international awards. The medal has 10 cm diameter, and 4 to 8 mm thickness.
