DESCRIPTION: Large quarto (4to.) 11 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches (294 x 215 mm), 84 pp. One of 250 copies printed on paper, total of 258. Limp vellum binding, gilt titling on spine, brown silk ties, yapp edges. Elaborate woodcut title page, full elaborate woodcut border to opening page, numerous side and three-quarter woodcut borders and 85 three-, six, eight, and eleven-line woodcut initials, all by William Morris. Woodcut press device on colophon. Printed in red and black in Troy type on hand-made Batchelor Perch paper with watermark. The Argument and dramatis personae printed in Chaucer type. Beautiful Greek type designed by Selwyn Image. CONDITION: Several small brown spots on front vellum cover, gilt titling on spine slightly worn but clearly legible, few faint spots at front edge of front free endplate (blank page). Lower corner of front cover slightly bowed (see final photo). Remainder of book is in fine condition throughout. Pages are extremely bright, clean and crisp. DISCUSSION: Written in 1865, this was Swinburne's first major success and it remains arguably his greatest work. The poem is loosely based upon the Greek mythology of Meleager and the Calydonian boar hunt, altered to marry it to modern Victorian style. This is a classic Kelmscott edition with elaborate woodcut title page and opening page, numerous woodcut border ornamental devices and woodcut initial letters. Aside from the minor flaws noted above and photographed, this is an extremely bright, clean copy. Please look carefully at all of the photos and ask all questions prior to purchase as sale is final.
