Description: Antique, early to mid 20th century bronze or brass washed cast metal mortar & pestle. Mortar shows an uncommon flanged design, and the heavy pestle has an unusual indented butt design. Mortar appears to be brass or bronzed wash with the cast metal alloy showing at the under side of the base. Pestle is quite heavy and may have more brass content in its alloy than the mortar; the two might have been matched up later with the pestly also showing more apparent use wear. Mortar and pestle have no cracks or breakages but some occasional, shallow pocking or pitting. Entire piece, both the mortar and pestle together weigh approximately 4 1/2 pounds. Mortar alone weighs about 2 3/4 pounds and pestle about 1 3/4 pounds. Mortar and pestle together, with the pestle sitting at rest inside the mortar measures approximately 7 1/2 inches tall. Mortar alone measures about 4 1/8 tall x 5 3/4 inches in diameter counting the flange and pestle measures about 7 1/4 x 1 3/4 x 13/16 inches at its greatest dimensions.
