Description: Antique French Creil & Montereau Porcelain Plate, Signed “Lebeuf, Milliet & Cie, Porcelaine Opaque, Creil et Montereau”, Combat de Taureau à Madrid (Bullfighting Scene in Madrid), Signed Schellenbach, Engraver This antique French porcelain plate has the mark “J5” impressed on the bottom, signifying the date of manufacture, along with the impressed mark of the manufacturer, “Lebeuf, Milliet & Cie. Porcelaine Opaque. Creil et Montereau. Médaille d’or 1834, 39, 44 et 49”. The company known as Lebeuf, Milliet et Cie. manufactured the famous Creil and Montereau porcelain between 1841 and 1876. The porcelain factories in Creil, north of Paris, founded in the 18th century, were mentioned by Flaubert in his celebrated novel, “A Sentimental Education”. In 1840 they joined together with those of Montereau, east of Paris, also founded in the 18th century, forming a single company. Winners of numerous awards, Creil et Montereau specialized in what was known as “faïence dure” or “porcelaine opaque”, a hard paste porcelain achieved by the addition of feldspar and kaolin to the traditional formula created by Wedgwood. Creil et Montereau became famous for the fine detail of their “grisaille” designs. This plate is the second in a series of scenes from Spain. The central scene is entitled “Combat de taureau (Madrid)” (“Bullfight, Madrid”) and illustrates a scene with toreadors in the Madrid bullfighting arena. It is signed Schellenbach, the name of the engraver. The border is handsomely decorated with images of Spanish fruits - grapes, citrus fruits, watermelons - along with classical design elements such as the caduceus, cornucopias, musical instruments, sheet music, quivers and birds. This plate is in very good condition with the exception of some yellowing, not unusual for a plate that has been around for 150 years! This magnificent 19th century plate will bring a fascinating bit of 19th century French history into your decor and would be an excellent addition to your collection!
