Description: “Thomas A. Snider started the T.A. Snider Preserve Company of Cincinnati in 1879, and was renowned for his “catsup” recipe made from fresh tomatoes without preservatives. In the early eighties Mrs. Snider kept a boarding house on Broadway. She was a refined and talented woman, whose catsups, chili sauce and other table delicacies were celebrated. All the later creations of the company were from the formulas of Mrs. Snider, who lived long enough to see her husband begin to reap the benefits of her genius and his industry. Snider was one of the largest ketchup makers at the turn of the 20th century and produced a variety of tomato related products and canned goods such as relish, tomato soup, oyster sauce, and pork and beans. The "Snider" brand name was acquired by Hunts Foods, Inc. in 1953.” As I was ready to put this with the “blanks” I turned up the bottom and it is richly embossed “THE T. A. SNIDER PRESERVE CO CINCINNATI, O” along with the rhombus shaped logo. We found many Blue Label ketchups out here in the West but there were not that many Sniders. This one is 10” high and 2 ¾” across. It is full of bubbles and rises to a crude screw top that would have had a zinc lid in the early 1900s. The soil has not been kind and there are stains inside and out as well as a couple of light scratches. It is beginning to become a sun-colored amethyst and will go darker if left in a window. The embossing on the base makes it special. It is in dug condition with no chips or cracks.
