Description: C. FOSTER AND BROTHERS WASHINGTON STYLE IRON HAND PRESS This press is a C. Foster and Brothers Washington Style Iron Hand Press. It was manufactured at the Cincinnati Type Foundry, circa 1852. The printing bed 40”x 27.5.” Assembled, the height is approximately 6.5’ tall, 36” deep and 5’ long.Estimated weight 1200-1500 pounds. After 40 years of research and discussions with numerous experts, collectors, and museum curators, we believe that this press by C. Foster and Brothers is one of only six presses of its kind known to be in existence. To the best of our knowledge, this press is unique among all the remaining examples. It is the only one that we have found that has a large ornate shell motif in gold (paint) at the top of the frame. It is also one of the most ornate Iron Hand Presses manufactured in the United States. Mechanically, it is a Washington Style press. It is all original except for the tympanum mechanism and the single support leg. The original name plate is missing, but an example exists in the International Print Museum in Los Angeles. The paint was probably restored in the 1960’s. It is fully functional and in excellent mechanical and visual condition with only some very minor paint loss. There is one minor crack in the rail support that does not affect its functionality. Purchased in 1971 from a retired newspaper executive in northern Illinois. The previous owner stated that he purchased it in Florida.
