Description: Lost Men of American History by Stewart H. Holbrook. The Macmillan Company, New York, 1946. 1st Edition, 1st Printing. Hardcover. Illustrated. Introduction by Allan Nevins. Publisher’s Synopsis: “Our great national heroes have their secure place in history books and in the hearts of their countrymen. But there are many other worthy Americans who, for one reason or another, have never been given their just due. Many of them were mavericks, unorthodox thinkers, men and women who went against the wind and the tide. Sometimes they were preposterous. More often they were genuine prophets ahead of their times. These are the people that Stewart Holbrook writes about in Lost Men of American History. Mr. Holbrook has dredged our past from 1620 to Pearl Harbor for important figures who have contributed to America's development, but who, because of the passage of time or the vagaries of history, are now obscure and forgotten. Although their names may be unknown, these men and women reveal the pattern of our national genius - a genius for the unconventional that no other nation can match.” Stewart Hall Holbrook (1893–1964) was an American logger, writer, and one of the nation’s most popular historians. His writings focused on what he called the "Far Corner": Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. Holbrook was the author of 35 books, including The Age of Moguls, The Columbia and Lost Men of American History.
